Regional Management (NYSE:RM) Has Affirmed Its Dividend Of $0.30
Share
Listen to the news

The board of Regional Management Corp. (NYSE:RM) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 10th of September, with investors receiving $0.30 per share. The dividend yield will be 3.7% based on this payment which is still above the industry average.

Regional Management's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, Regional Management's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 40.5% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 28%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Regional Management Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

It is great to see that Regional Management has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 5 years was $0.80 in 2020, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $1.20. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 8.4% a year over that time. Regional Management has been growing its dividend at a decent rate, and the payments have been stable. However, the payment history is very short, so there is no evidence yet that the dividend can be sustained over a full economic cycle.

We Could See Regional Management's Dividend Growing

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Regional Management has impressed us by growing EPS at 5.8% per year over the past five years. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.

In Summary

In summary, we are pleased with the dividend remaining consistent, and we think there is a good chance of this continuing in the future. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
