Repligen Insiders Sell US$6.9m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Share
Listen to the news

The fact that multiple Repligen Corporation (NASDAQ:RGEN) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Repligen

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chair, Anthony Hunt, for US$3.3m worth of shares, at about US$127 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$124. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Does Repligen Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Repligen insiders own about US$31m worth of shares. That equates to 0.4% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

An insider sold Repligen shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Zooming out, the longer term picture doesn't give us much comfort.
