Listen to the news

The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. That downside risk was realized by West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. (NYSE:WST) shareholders over the last year, as the share price declined 33%. That's disappointing when you consider the market returned 12%. Looking at the longer term, the stock is down 27% over three years.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unhappily, West Pharmaceutical Services had to report a 16% decline in EPS over the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 33% share price fall. This suggests the EPS fall has made some shareholders more nervous about the business.
