Listen to the news

The fact that multiple Murphy USA Inc. (NYSE:MUSA) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Murphy USA

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Non-Executive Chairman, Robert Murphy, for US$8.6m worth of shares, at about US$515 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$407). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.
