WisdomTree Insiders Sell US$2.0m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution
Share
Listen to the news

The fact that multiple WisdomTree, Inc. (NYSE:WT) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At WisdomTree

The Senior Advisor to the CEO & Chief Administrative Officer, Peter Ziemba, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$11.43 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$10.39). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

All up, insiders sold more shares in WisdomTree than they bought, over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that WisdomTree insiders own 9.5% of the company, worth about US$137m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At WisdomTree Tell Us?

The fact that there have been no WisdomTree insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of WisdomTree insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. While conducting our analysis, we found that WisdomTree has 3 warning signs and it would be unwise to ignore these.
