Insiders At Performance Food Group Sold US$9.3m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
Share
Listen to the news

Many Performance Food Group Company (NYSE:PFGC) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Performance Food Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Chairman & CEO, George Holm, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.7m worth of shares at a price of US$73.55 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$86.20. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 3.0% of George Holm's stake.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Performance Food Group insiders own 1.9% of the company, worth about US$260m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Performance Food Group Insiders?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much.
