If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. How Strong Is Sun Country Airlines Holdings' Balance Sheet?

The latest balance sheet data shows that Sun Country Airlines Holdings had liabilities of US$382.9m due within a year, and liabilities of US$606.1m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$158.8m and US$39.7m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling US$790.6m more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

When you consider that this deficiency exceeds the company's US$631.5m market capitalization, you might well be inclined to review the balance sheet intently. Hypothetically, extremely heavy dilution would be required if the company were forced to pay down its liabilities by raising capital at the current share price.

We measure a company's debt load relative to its earnings power by looking at its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and by calculating how easily its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) cover its interest expense (interest cover). The advantage of this approach is that we take into account both the absolute quantum of debt (with net debt to EBITDA) and the actual interest expenses associated with that debt (with its interest cover ratio).

We're quite clear that we consider Sun Country Airlines Holdings to be really rather risky, as a result of its balance sheet health.
