Investors Appear Satisfied With NV5 Global, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NVEE) Prospects As Shares Rocket 25%
Share
Listen to the news

NV5 Global, Inc. (NASDAQ:NVEE) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 20% over that time.

Since its price has surged higher, NV5 Global's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 44.7x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, NV5 Global's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is NV5 Global's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, NV5 Global would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 27%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 50% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 27% per year during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 10% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why NV5 Global is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On NV5 Global's P/E

Shares in NV5 Global have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that NV5 Global maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
