Market Participants Recognise Coupang, Inc.'s (NYSE:CPNG) Revenues Pushing Shares 35% Higher
Share
Listen to the news

Coupang, Inc. (NYSE:CPNG) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 35% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking further back, the 24% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Coupang is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.6x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Multiline Retail industry have P/S ratios below 1x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Coupang's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Coupang has been doing relatively well. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Coupang.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

Coupang's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 21% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 61% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 13% each year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 10% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Coupang's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does Coupang's P/S Mean For Investors?

Coupang's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Coupang's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
