ATI Inc. (NYSE:ATI) Looks Just Right With A 55% Price Jump
Share
Listen to the news

ATI Inc. (NYSE:ATI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 55% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 14% is also fairly reasonable.

Following the firm bounce in price, ATI may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.6x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

ATI could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For ATI?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as ATI's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 3.5% decrease to the company's bottom line. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 59,729% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 17% per year during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 10% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why ATI is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

The large bounce in ATI's shares has lifted the company's P/E to a fairly high level. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of ATI's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
