O-I Glass, Inc.'s (NYSE:OI) Share Price Boosted 26% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Share
Listen to the news

O-I Glass, Inc. (NYSE:OI) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. While recent buyers may be laughing, long-term holders might not be as pleased since the recent gain only brings the stock back to where it started a year ago.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies operating in the United States' Packaging industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.9x, you may still consider O-I Glass as an attractive investment with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does O-I Glass' Recent Performance Look Like?

O-I Glass could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is O-I Glass' Revenue Growth Trending?

O-I Glass' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.3%. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 1.2% per annum as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 8.4% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we can see why O-I Glass is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What We Can Learn From O-I Glass' P/S?

O-I Glass' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of O-I Glass' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
