Mobvista Inc.'s (HKG:1860) 27% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk
Share
Listen to the news

Mobvista Inc. (HKG:1860) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. Of course, over the longer-term many would still wish they owned shares as the stock's price has soared 121% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large drop in price, Mobvista's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 68.9x might still make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Hong Kong, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 10x and even P/E's below 5x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Our free stock report includes 3 warning signs investors should be aware of before investing in Mobvista. Read for free now.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Mobvista over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Mobvista's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Mobvista's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 27% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 18% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.

With this information, we find it concerning that Mobvista is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Mobvista's P/E

A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Mobvista's very lofty P/E. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Mobvista currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Mobvista (of which 1 is a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
