Beijing Enterprises Holdings (HKG:392) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of CN¥0.77

Listen to the news

The board of Beijing Enterprises Holdings Limited (HKG:392) has announced that it will pay a dividend of CN¥0.77 per share on the 8th of August. The payment will take the dividend yield to 5.5%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Beijing Enterprises Holdings' Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. However, prior to this announcement, Beijing Enterprises Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 32.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 33% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was CN¥0.67, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥1.51. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 8.5% a year over that time. We like to see dividends have grown at a reasonable rate, but with at least one substantial cut in the payments, we're not certain this dividend stock would be ideal for someone intending to live on the income.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's not great to see that Beijing Enterprises Holdings' earnings per share has fallen at approximately 6.5% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.

Our Thoughts On Beijing Enterprises Holdings' Dividend

In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Beijing Enterprises Holdings' payments are rock solid. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
