Listen to the news

The board of Hang Lung Group Limited (HKG:10) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 16th of June, with investors receiving HK$0.65 per share. This payment means that the dividend yield will be 7.6%, which is around the industry average.

Hang Lung Group's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable

We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Before this announcement, Hang Lung Group was paying out 73% of earnings, but a comparatively small 31% of free cash flows. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.

If the company can't turn things around, EPS could fall by 25.0% over the next year. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 98%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.

Hang Lung Group Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from HK$0.80 total annually to HK$0.86. Dividend payments have grown at less than 1% a year over this period. Slow and steady dividend growth might not sound that exciting, but dividends have been stable for ten years, which we think makes this a fairly attractive offer.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. Earnings per share has been sinking by 25% over the last five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough.

Our Thoughts On Hang Lung Group's Dividend

Overall, we think Hang Lung Group is a solid choice as a dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't raised this year. With shrinking earnings, the company may see some issues maintaining the dividend even though they look pretty sustainable for now. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
