Keep An Eye On Star CM Holdings As Insider Stock Selling Hits CN¥100m
Share
Listen to the news

Last week, Star CM Holdings Limited's (HKG:6698) stock jumped 23%, but insiders who sold CN¥100m worth of stock in over the past year are likely to be in a better position. Selling at an average price of CN¥4.95, which is higher than the current price, may have been the wisest decision for these insiders as their investment would have been worth less now than when they sold.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Star CM Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chairman & CEO, Ming Tian, for HK$21m worth of shares, at about HK$4.80 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is HK$3.99. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels. The only individual insider seller over the last year was Ming Tian.

Ming Tian sold a total of 20.23m shares over the year at an average price of CN¥4.95. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 15% of Star CM Holdings shares, worth about HK$237m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Star CM Holdings Insiders?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Star CM Holdings insiders selling. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Star CM Holdings (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) you should know about.
